I picked up this card at the Autumn South of England Postcard Fair at Woking in September, it wasn’t something I was particularly looking for, but the moment I stumbled across it I knew I had to buy it.

This card was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons and is part of their “Rembrandtesque” series. I think the colouring particularly helps to make the image more striking. Of course this is a stereotypical image of a witch with her black cat, which from my understanding is no longer representative of the modern day witch.

As you can see this is an undivided back, meaning that it is a fairly early card, unfortunately the cancellation is not very clear, it could be 1903 or 1905 which would be appropriate for an undivided back.
From some brief research the recipient appears to be David Alexander Angell of 43 Wote Street, Basingstoke, Hampshire, who was born in July 1888, hopefully he wasn’t permanently scarred by this image.
