Stonehenge, Wiltshire

Stonehenge is another of my areas of interest, I began collecting postcards of Stonehenge when it became harder and harder to find postcards of my main collecting interest. As a popular UK tourist attraction it is no surprise that Stonehenge has appeared on hundreds (if not thousands) of postcards, so examples are relatively cheap and easy to find.

Stonehenge postcards give a great cross-section of postcard history, with most of the major national publishers issuing postcards, along with local Wiltshire publishers and also official postcards issued by the likes of HM Office of Works and now English Heritage.

Postcards of Stonehenge have been issued from the earliest years of postcard publishing right up to the current day which means you get a good illustration of the evolution of postcard styles of the decades.

This postcard shows a time when visitors were allowed access to the stones themselves, I am not sure if this shows a school group with one of the girls left behind to sit for the photographer.

This postcard was part of The “Forest” Series, but sadly I don’t know who was responsible for this series. I have several “Forest” postcards of Avebury in my collection and would really like to find out who published these as they are very good quality photographs.
