1960 Underground Map
This month has seen the launch of the latest edition of London Underground’s Pocket Tube Map designed by Korean artist Do Ho Suh, so I thought it might be interesting to show a postcard from another of my collecting themes, London Transport Musuem (LTM) postcards.

This postcard shows a tube map from the 1960 and whilst it has many similarities with the current Tube map, not only are there fewer lines but there are some notable differences in the design style.
This design by Harold Hutchinson was short-lived and subsequent maps have been based on the work of Harry Beck. You can read a brief history of the pocket Underground map on the London Transport Museum’s website.
I have been a fan of trains and railways since I was a boy and the London Underground to a lesser extent but after seeing some of the LTM’s postcards for sale at a postcard fair I became interested in their postcards and began avidly collecting them.
From a collecting perspective they are particularly appealing to me because up until recently the cards were numbered, making it easy to see where there are gaps in your collection.
The Museum’s postcards cover a wide range of subjects from all different forms of transport not just the Underground. Although I don’t think I have seen any postcards of the cable car yet.
This postcard was published by Transport for London in 2017 for the London Transport Museum. I purchased it new from the museum shop in November 2019 just before I began commuting daily to London.
